"I'm bringing the dumbbells in close to my body to accentuate the triceps, but I also get the chance to squeeze my hands in as much as I can, so I get that extra engagement of the chest," he says. After this, he goes into the dumbbell squinter lunge for 40 seconds, a variation which involves stepping backwards and tilting his torso forward at the bottom of every rep.Īfter another 20 second rest and set of death marches, Cavaliere works the upper body in the third round with a close-grip dumbbell pushup. He starts the second round with another 5 reps on each arm of the death march. Cavaliere performs this for 40 seconds, then rests for 20 seconds. Round 1 consists of the death march, followed by a dumbbell thruster, which hits the shoulders, the upper chest, the triceps, and the legs. (This move can also be done in place as a more traditional renegade row if space is limited.) Perform 5 reps on each side, before going into the next move. Beginning in a pushup position with a dumbbell in each hand, you then "walk" by rowing each dumbbell to travel forward. If you want to fatigue the muscle, you can go as high as 20 reps. As for repetitions, with the lighter weights, you can use the standard 8-12 reps. Select one of each type of exercise and aim to complete a set 2-3 times each workout. The routine is designed to be suitable for any fitness level for beginners, Cavaliere recommends using a pair of 10-pound dumbbells, 30 pounds for intermediate level, and 50 pounds for people who are more advanced.Įach round starts with a variation of the dumbbell pushup crawl: the dumbbell death march. The bottom line is, you should make her feel special and loved. Maybe you can make her laugh, make her feel empowered, or help her forget how old she is turning. What you say in your 40th birthday wish to her will depend on your relationship. Whether she is your family, best friend, or the love of your love, you want to make sure she feels her best on her birthday. If you are reading this, you are either turning 40 (and trying your best to embrace it) or someone you love is approaching this special birthday and you want to make sure that the 40th birthday message you share with her is perfect. What to Say to Someone Who is Turning 40? These next few years are all about you doing what you want, accomplishing things you’ve had on your to-do list for quite some time, and enjoying everything you’ve worked to achieve. Your 30s? Of course, this may not look the same for everyone, but maybe your 20s was the time you spent working hard (and partying hard. I promise, there is a silver hair, I mean silver lining, to your 40th birthday and here it is: But the truth is, this may just be the best decade of your life if you embrace it with open arms and an open mind. Some of your co-workers may be young enough to be your children and you probably have begun a sentence with “When I was your age…” at least once. You are young enough to understand social media and may even be a tech wiz, but you are also old enough to remember what life was like without your cell phone. Perhaps you feel like you’re reaching that awkward gap between your youth and your elder years. It is the age when your life experiences finally pay off-most likely, you’re better at making wise decisions and feel more confident in your own skin. Where has all the time gone?įour whole decades of a life you have made for yourself, and though it may feel like this age is a reason to completely freak out, it's a milestone in a story that, in many ways, is just getting started. And those elements are pretty cool, though I definitely have some complaints about them too. Their strength in this case would be the meta-game elements. But I am expecting them to play to their strengths or I would simply play MTG instead. Obviously, I'm not expecting any indie game to match MTG in that arena. It’s not serious it’s fun.Ok, so my issue here is that MTG is my gold standard for card games, which has like 10x the depth and variety of the card game in Inscryption. “It’s very over-the-top with the violence. “Yeah, the game is still pretty violent,” he chortled. For all of his talk about Bulletstorm’s advanced gameplay, Kucharski said this one will still carry the same smirky tone of its forebear. We had to recreate a lot of stuff, but the assets are based on the originals.”īulletstorm VR, announced at the beginning of June, will launch later in 2023 for Meta Quest and PlayStation VR 2. “We had to redo some of the stuff, obviously, we had to change the engine from the old Unreal 3 to, I believe, 4.27 is what we’re using right now. “We used a lot of assets from the original game,” Kucharski said. I want to say it’s a new game, but it is the same original story.” Half of the levels are exactly the same as the original Bulletstorm, he said, “but there is new content,” even if that doesn’t mean narrative changes. The adaptation is also faithful to the original story, though Kucharski said the game is not a “one-to-one copy. Players may freely roam the levels as they did in the original. “This is something that was simply not possible using standard controllers, or a keyboard and mouse.”īulletstorm VR is definitely not a rail-shooter adaptation of the franchise, Kucharski emphasized. The dual-wield nature, of a gun in one hand and the leash in another, is more easily expressed through a dedicated controller in each hand of the player, Kucharski reasoned. Reloading a weapon, for example, is a more meaningful experience. The leash, Kucharski said, is the most VR-ready feature of Bulletstorm’s original gameplay. The groundbreaking components, which seemed to take a back seat to all the cussing and the violence in the original marketing, were Bulletstorm’s “skillshot” gameplay loop the use of the environment to creatively eliminate enemies and the “energy leash” that hero Grayson Hunt uses to lasso foes, stun them, or fling them to their doom. “I found Bulletstorm very unique I thought the gameplay was very fresh, something that was groundbreaking at that point.” “I was big-time into first-person shooters,” said Kucharski, a developer who had worked on Medal of Honor and other military shooters in the decade preceding Bulletstorm’s launch. People Can Fly, which Epic acquired in 2013 and then spun off in 2015, retained ownership of the franchise, and still had enough of an audience to warrant remastered releases for consoles in 20. Electronic Arts and Epic Games practically abandoned the property after it fell far short of profit and sales expectations. More crucial, Kucharski said, was the cult-hit status Bulletstorm continues to enjoy. It also helped that People Can Fly, like Bloober Team, is a Poland-based developer. Incuvo had found success adapting established games on a work-for-hire basis, and Kucharski was looking for another hit to keep the studio’s momentum going. “ Bulletstorm is so action-packed, so close to the action, and with such physical interaction, it just looked like it was designed for VR.”Īt the time, Incuvo was independent and fresh from its VR adaptation of two of Bloober Team’s horror titles - Layers of Fear and Blair Witch, both for Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR. “When we were searching for a next project, we looked at Bulletstorm and thought this game, with its mechanics, was actually, like, designed for VR,” Kucharski said. Gratuitously violent and absurdly foul-mouthed (does anyone else remember “Hey, dick tits!”?), even if Bulletstorm drew laudatory reviews for its gameplay, particularly its ammunition economy, it hardly seems like a game that could be called “ahead of its time.”īut it is, insists Radomir Kucharski of Incuvo, the Polish virtual reality port shop that Bulletstorm maker People Can Fly acquired at the end of 2021. You wouldn’t expect it for a game that, in hindsight, scans more as a Duke Nukem-esque guilty pleasure that came nowhere close to its sales expectations. A dozen years later, Bulletstorm, somehow, endures. In other words, mixing ink with your miniature paints adds vibrancy and color depth. Mixing inks with other model paints does two amazing things: 1) it will thin your hobby paints without using water (which prevents loss of binding properties of the paint, and 2) shifts and deepens the color saturation of your paint. I find liners very useful, and you can see examples of miniatures I painted with these liners in my gallery. The edges on the clothing were darkened with Reaper Liner ink and fine liner brush. Reaper Paint has specific liners that that are designed to flow well off your brush and darken edges quickly. Use liners like a reversed coloring-book: darken the colored elements of your miniature to make each part stand out. These inks are named for their intended purpose, which is to “line” the edges and elements of your model. Liners are highly-pigmented dark-colored inks. RELATED: USE WATERCOLO R PAINT AS A WASH Liners You add other art mediums to your DIY washes, or buy pre-made washes that will skip the tedium of figuring out the correct mixture ratios. Of course, a good wash will go where you want it to go, and dry evenly without cracking or creating “rings”. You can make your own washes simply by adding extra water to thin your regular acrylic paints. Using a wash will bring out details in a model by darkening the deeper textures in a model’s surface. Army Painter Quickshade is a great example of a wash that rapidly adds contrast to a model. Usually, washes are a darker color that helps you add contrast to a miniature. Washes are a thinned version of paint designed to flow into the recesses of a surface. If you’re airbrushing your model, inks are a quick and easy way to glaze over a zenithal highlight base coat. Because inks are thinner and have high color intensity, they are also a useful alternative for thinning other model acrylic paints (here’s a great example of using inks for thinning other paints). Inks are great for freehanding because they flow more easily off your brush bristles and have excellent coverage. Inks made with pigment coloring require a “binder”, such as acrylic or resin polymer, that cures/dries on the applied surface. This makes dyes different from pigments, which do not chemically bind to the material they color. pigments: A dye is a colored chemical substance that directly bonds to a surface. For miniature painting, this means that you can often dilute an ink to a much greater extent without losing color intensity or depth.ĭyes vs. Inks also have a high-level of color saturation (or color pigment density) thant regular paint. Official fuel economy numbers won’t be available until closer to the Santa Fe’s on-sale date in March 2024, and no, Hyundai isn’t planning to replace the current Santa Fe PHEV for the United States. That’s 6 hp and 13 lb-ft more than the otherwise similar powertrain found in the one-size-down Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. If you’re looking for something more efficient, Hyundai will offer a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine, small electric motor and six-speed automatic, putting out 232 hp and 271 lb-ft. First up is the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic combo that’s used in the Santa Cruz pickup as an upgrade, making 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. While global markets will be treated to an array of powertrain options, including a diesel and a plug-in hybrid, we’ll only get two choices in North America. This is in addition to deep door pockets that’ll hold huge water bottles and storage space under the center console, as well. To the right, there are two gloveboxes: a top one behind the dash panel and a more traditional one by the passenger’s knees. This isn’t a weird pre-production quirk, either.Ī curved display houses a pair of 12.3-inch screens, one for the gauges and another for the Hyundai Group’s latest multimedia system that gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among other upgrades and updates. The large center console area has two dedicated wireless charging pads for a pair of smartphones (a rarity), and the cubby under the armrest opens from either the front or back, which sounds cool and functional, but you have to give the lid a good hard pull to get it to unlatch. The steering wheel looks like it was ripped right out of a Land Rover, as do the squared-off air vents and angled climate control screen flanked by temperature dials for the driver and passenger. If you thought the Santa Fe’s exterior looked a little Defender-y, the cockpit will give you the same impression. If that's a problem, loading extra stuff on the raised roof rails is uniquely aided by grab handles in the C pillars that help you hoist yourself up while standing on the rear tire. The remaining cargo space behind it is another story – it’s tiny with all seats raised, much like the mechanically related Kia Sorento that has similar exterior dimensions. Getting into the third row is kind of a hassle, since the seats don’t slide forward enough, but once you manage to wedge yourself back there, the amount of space available seems comparable to what you’d find in the considerably larger Palisade (196.7 inches long versus the Santa Fe at 190.2). Once inside, you’ll find generous accommodations for first- and second-row passengers, with that boxy design lending itself to mega headroom. You definitely need the larger 21-inch wheels to really fill out those generous wells, as the standard 18s can look a little puny.ĭon’t worry, U.S.-spec Santa Fes will have tinted rear windows, unlike the Korean-market tester pictured here – another upgrade that not only improves things cosmetically but helps to keep the cabin cool. But goodness, does the new Santa Fe have a whole lot more curb appeal. Seriously, it looks more like a Land Rover Discovery than the actual Land Rover Discovery.īy the tape measure, the 2024 Santa Fe isn’t that much larger than its predecessor, only growing 1.8 inches in length and 1.4 inches in height (their widths are identical). Hyundai really butched this one up, to the point where Land Rover comparisons are not unwarranted. The new Santa Fe’s basic checklist hasn’t changed for this latest generation – seating for seven, all-wheel drive, loads of tech, optional hybrid power – but its overall shape is quite different. Hyundai’s redesigned midsize SUV is a quiet, comfortable and surprisingly luxurious steed that makes freeway crawls a non-issue. Hoot and a half, let me tell ya.īut behind the wheel of a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe, none of this stuff matters. On top of that, traffic is always congested. The roads are mostly flat and straight, and their level of speed regulation is borderline draconian – like, to the point where a multi-hour drive on a freeway becomes a neverending slog to appease what feels like a billion speed cameras. Moving at a slower pace allows for feeling a stronger connection between body and mind, which can gradually open up mental space for deep reflection. If possible, try to continue these slower forms of moving, as they do not only provide physical benefits. For example, when people walk or cycle as their primary forms of transportation, rather than taking the tube, train or bus.ĭuring lockdown, we have all had to stay close to our homes, and public transport has been for essential workers only.Īs we come out of lockdown, the city of London, for example, is expecting more people to continue walking and cycling rather than taking faster forms of transport, and is altering the built environment of the city to facilitate this. We call this embodied deceleration – when the body itself slows down. Our research shows that in order to experience the benefits of slowing down, people must decelerate in three ways. Now that we are gradually emerging from lockdown, one tentative step at a time, is it possible to hold on to the benefits of being slowed down, and not go back to our old rushed way of living? People began playing board games and puzzles, gardening, baking and other analogue pursuits with their new found time. The office, gyms, pubs, clubs and restaurants closed. People literally stopped running to work. Only a privileged few could afford to slow down.īut in lockdown, the pace of life slowed dramatically overnight for everyone. Keeping up with work responsibilities, social obligations and the latest tech or fashion trends was a never-ending feat. Rushing around, living life at rocket pace was the norm. Neuroscientists such as Marco Iacoboni have argued that mirror neuron systems in the human brain help humans understand the actions and intentions of other people. Some researchers speculate that mirror systems may simulate observed actions, and thus contribute to theory of mind skills, while others relate mirror neurons to language abilities. In 2014, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B published a special issue entirely devoted to mirror neuron research. The subject of mirror neurons continues to generate intense debate. To date, no widely accepted neural or computational models have been put forward to describe how mirror neuron activity supports cognitive functions. Birds have been shown to have imitative resonance behaviors and neurological evidence suggests the presence of some form of mirroring system. The function of the mirror system in humans is a subject of much speculation. In humans, brain activity consistent with that of mirror neurons has been found in the premotor cortex, the supplementary motor area, the primary somatosensory cortex, and the inferior parietal cortex. By this definition, such neurons have been directly observed in humans and primate species, and in birds. Mirror neurons are not always physiologically distinct from other types of neurons in the brain their main differentiating factor is their response patterns. Thus, the neuron "mirrors" the behavior of the other, as though the observer were itself acting. A mirror neuron is a neuron that fires both when an organism acts and when the organism observes the same action performed by another. |
